About Hearshort — fast pitch decisions

Hearshort trains fast pitch discrimination under time pressure — deciding, again and again, which of two tones is higher before the clock runs out. Speed matters because real listening is fast: following a melody, catching a wrong note or reacting to intonation all happen in the moment, not at leisure.

You get thirty seconds. Two tones play; tap the higher one, and the next pair appears at once. Answer as many as you can while staying accurate. The same run of pairs is served to everyone that day, so your score is a fair head-to-head measure.

Deciding which tone is higher rests on how the ear encodes pitch in the first place. Our guide to what pitch is explains that foundation. Browse all of our ear-training guides to go further.
